Wye Valley trip notes

Wye Valley Visit

Notes:

• The Brewery has been in business for the last 26 years and is family run.

There bottled beer id distributed to local pubs, restaurants, supermarkets and delicatessens and their draught beer are sent to local pubs.

• They only distribute 50 – 60 miles around the local area.

Their bottled beer have suggestion of what food accompanies the various ales well.

• The brewery find it very important that their ingredients are sourced locally and that any left over’s aren’t wasted but are sold as cattle feed to local farmers.

They recycle all of their caskets by washing, and sterilizing them first. They are then refilled and distributed again.

They only use brown or green colored bottles to stop sunlight breaking down hop components. ( mainly brown ).

• When distributed, bottles should be stored upright. They are very proud of the fact that their bottles contain sediment that allows the beer to have extra quality once packaged. The sediment allows a secondary fermenting process. When stored the wrong way the sediment rises to the top and this may put off people.

Q&A’s for the brief:

The designs must be generic for all of the different ales.

Packaging has to contain 3 products, ideally 2 beers and one Leggs condiments.

A nice touch would be to include what food accompanies the Ales.

• The target audience are both men and women. Design for family, friends and partners who may be buying the gift pack for someone else. – Something to consider.

• Traditional components are relevant to an extents but this shouldn’t be a main focus, as they don’t want it to look old fashioned.

Use the Wye Valley Brewery brand as the main brand for the packaging.

• The main competitors are brewery’s such as  Badgers, and Fullers etc.

• The typeface used is Gill Sans so need to carry this on to the design preferably.
• There is potential for QR codes.

• All packaging is delivered to the brewery flat to then be assembled. So no glues or adhesives. Open minded about materials used but needs to be storable at the brewery before hand assembly as it’s more likely to go into the chain flat packed and assembled later. If not then it needs to be neatly stacked and stored.

• making the perception that its eco-friendly is preffered. Although making sure its being in-keeping with the business.

• They quite like the look of the newely relised Badgers packaging for it’s simplistic designs. Needs to be a mature design.

• Providence is an essential theme for the packaging in order to tie all the products together.

Holding text acceptable, although try and put my own text together if poss.

When designing the packaging, bare in mind the sediment process within the bottles and the product needs to be stored upright.
